how to order a custom quilt with quilt maker Liberty Worth

A custom handmade quilt is a fantastic way to celebrate a special person or event in your life. Custom memory quilts make great gifts and can become a legacy gift that can be passed down for generations.

But how does the custom quilt process work?

Here is a snapshot of how the commission process goes when you work with me as your designated custom quiltmaker.

Basic notes about custom quilts:

  • I am delighted to work with you. Coming up with beautiful solutions for your needs is a great joy for me. I can’t wait to hear about what inspires you..

  • I value the customer’s ideas and opinions. Feel free to approach me with ideas about what colors you like, what you want to celebrate and what your favorite quilts are of mine (making a pinterest board is helpful) and you can click here to search instagram under #libbydibbyquilts for a comprehensive grouping of my work).

  • I don’t copy other people’s work. If you’ve seen a quilt made by someone that you just “must have” - I encourage you to track down the original quiltmaker and commission them.

  • Sorry, but I do not make basic t-shirt quilts. If you ask, I’m more than happy to give you a list of potential t-shirt quilt makers here in the US that will give you a t-shirt quilt that can highlight your shirts.. Though I have used t-shirts as part of my designs in some of my memory quilts, my work generally is best reserved for fabrics without stretch such as woven cottons, denim, silks and shirting, even some sheeting.

  • Quilt-making is a slow process. Please be prepared to pay a fair price for the creation of an heirloom. Custom quilts have taken me anywhere between 15-100 hours to make. Contact me for a quote.

  • Usually we begin by a consultation which can be handled in person or over the phone, or zoom. I’ve had some customers where all of our interactions took place through messaging - I will work with whatever is best for you.

  • Some techniques are easier than others. My Noisy Flowers quilts are far more difficult to make than most of the bed quilts I have made and are priced accordingly.

  • If you have budget restrictions, let me know in the beginning. I expect 50% of the initial quote upon the beginning of the project and the balance upon completion. I accept Zelle (preferred), Paypal, Venmo, check and cash or I can create private listings on my site which will take credit card payment.

  • If we are making a custom memory quilt from your loved one’s clothing - you can either deconstruct the clothing into flat pieces of fabric yourself as some families like to do, or you can pay me to do this for you. This is done at an additional cost.

  • It’s my joy to send you process pics and updates as I work on your piece.

  • Design cannot be changed after work has begun, though I often will ask your opinion on little ideas that I have that come up in the creation process.

  • Your quilt will arrive with a label on the back that I can personalize for you, or leave blank for you to personalize.

  • Deadlines must be communicated from the beginning of the project. Quilts are a slow art, and many hours need to be planned for.

  • You’ll get to choose between cotton or wool batting. Wool has a little more loft to it and cotton lies flatter and has a more antique look. My personal favorite for the quilts we have in our home is wool due to it’s breathability and comfort. Also good to know that my husband is allergic to wool and has never had a problem with wool batting inside a cotton quilt. All of my bed quilts are made to withstand washing in a regular washing machine.

  • Smaller art quilts are mounted on boards and come ready to hang with gallery wire.

  • Timeframe for delivery is based on my current schedule of commission work. I will be very realistic about timing and I have never yet missed a deadline.

  • My current commission waitlist is around 4-9 months out. I require a non-refundable $100 down payment to secure your spot on my waitlist. This down payment will count towards your finished quilt.

Pricing for custom quilts is per project and I am happy to send you a quote or proposal once we have discussed your design ideas. I do consultations for free and once we have decided to collaborate on a project, I will send you a contract to sign before I begin work.
